- I've recently purchased a low-budget 14.4 modem to replace the
- old 2400 baud modem I'd been using. (Turns out that I got one
- of those RPI modems where the V.42 runs on the processor... but
- that's another story). The machine I've got it connected to is
- a 386SX @20MHz. The UART is an 8250 and is not replaceable (it's
- built into the chipset on the motherboard). I also have no room
- for expansion boards, as the only two I have are filled with a
- display card and sound card, so a high speed serial port card is
- out of the question. I'm attempting (and sometimes succeeding)
- in running Netscape using Trumpet Winsock (with the RPI disabled
- to minimize the processor load), but I'm still getting quite a few
- comm over-runs. Sometimes it appears that the connection just
- gets completely hung up. Sometimes data will appear (judging from
- the SD and RD lights) to pour in for a few seconds and then just
- stop and never finish.
-
- Is there anything that I might try to optimize this pitiful hardware
- configuration? Any suggested Trumpet settings (MSS? RWIN? MTU?)
- that might help? Any Windows settings that might help?
- The modem is a "Phoebe" 14.4 fax/modem. Perhaps there's some modem
- setup that would help?
-
- I'd sure appreciate any help available out there.
-
- Thanks,
-
